Job Purpose

The HSE Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health, safety, and environmental programs to ensure compliance with legal standards and international best practices. The role includes managing workplace health initiatives, environmental sustainability, and safety awareness to protect people, assets, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety:

  • Develop and implement HSE policies and procedures in line with OSHA, Factory Ordinance, and other local regulations.
  • Conduct workplace safety inspections, risk assessments, and accident investigations.
  • Organize safety drills and employee awareness programs.
  • Monitor occupational health hazards (noise, ergonomics, chemical exposure, etc.) and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and promote a safety-first culture.

Environment:

  • Support and maintain environmental management systems in line with ISO 14001 standards.
  • Monitor waste management, chemical handling, and pollution control activities.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and propose sustainable practices.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g., CEA) regarding environmental compliance and reporting.
  • Support initiatives for energy efficiency, water conservation, and eco-friendly practices.

Management Systems:

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001, ISO 45001/OHSAS 18001 standards.
  • Maintain records of audits, inspections, training, and compliance reports.
  • Prepare and present HSE performance reports to management.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Professional certification in HSE is an advantage.
  • 2-3 years' experience in HSE role within manufacturing/industrial sector preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 14001 and OHS standards.
  • Familiar with local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Good communication, reporting, and training skills.
  • Candidate should be based in or willing to work in the Galle/Matara area.
